In recent years, we've been hearing more and more that printers "use vegetable-based inks" or "print organically." This sounds good, but what does it actually mean? Are vegetable oil-based inks actually better for the environment - and are they safe for children?

What are vegetable paints?

Vegetable inks in offset printing are products in which some of the mineral oils have been replaced with vegetable oils - most often soybean, linseed or canola. However, this does not mean that the ink is 100% natural. In addition to oil, it also contains pigments, resins, dryers and technological additives.

Facts - when vegetable dyes really help

  • Smaller carbon footprint. Replacing fossil oils with vegetable oils reduces the consumption of non-renewable resources.
  • Better paper recycling. Vegetable inks are often more easily removed in the fiber recovery process, improving the quality of recycling.
  • Lower VOC emissions. Well-developed formulas can generate fewer VOCs as they dry.

Myths - what not to discount

  • They are not fully biodegradable. Biodegradable may be the oil, but not the paint as a whole - pigments and additives often do not degrade.
  • Not always "safe for children." It depends on the pigments and additives. Only products with the appropriate approvals guarantee the absence of harmful substances.
  • Not every vegetable ink = same print quality. Sometimes it requires minor adjustments in the offset process, such as longer drying.

Ecology and safety in practice.

If you're printing children's booklets, notebooks or packaging, pay attention not only to the slogan "vegetable-based inks," but also to the certificates proving the absence of heavy metals and compliance with safety standards (such as EN 71-3). Only complete documentation guarantees that the product is truly safe and environmentally friendly.Vegetable oil-based inks are a step toward more sustainable printing, but they are not a magic solution. What matters is the entire composition of the ink and the responsible approach of the manufacturer. In our printing house, we carefully analyze raw materials, select certified inks and varnishes and help create prints that are eco-friendly, aesthetically pleasing and safe - especially for the youngest users. For them, an innovative project was created in our printing house - Child Friendly Product - you can read more about it here: https://druk-intro.pl/2025/07/31/ppd-produkt-przyjazny-dziecku/
